The leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Ashanti Region, says NDC is behind the arrest of Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, however NDC says there is "absolutely" nothing behind the claim.

An agitated crowd of about 500 people stormed the police command on Tuesday requesting the release of Boasiako, claiming to be supporters of the NPP and told Citi FM they believed President Mahama orchestrated the arrest of Chairman Wontumi.
The crowd said the arrest was orchestrated to deliberately divert the party’s attention from the ongoing limited voters’ registration exercise.
NPP released a statement on Wednesday morning, signed by Regional Secretary Samuel Pyne where it expressed “great surprise” that “some unseen hands are trying to manipulate the police service in getting the Regional Chairman, Benard Antwi Boasiako, Wontumi behind bars.”
The statement said the party saw this as a “clear distraction move by the NDC to make gains in the Limited Registration Exercise.
“We are therefore cautioning all party agents and officials who have been assigned to registration centers and other points all in connection with the registration exercise to stay at post and work diligently too. “
The statement said NPP supporters should show their solidarity to the cause of the party, but refrain from actions that may lead to violence.
However, earlier Deputy Secretary of the NPP in the Ashanti Region, Kwame Adom Appiah denied claims that the obstruction at the police station was planned by the NPP, Citi FM reports.
Police said Boasiako was detained following allegations of assault leveled against him by the NPP Member of Parliament for Manhyia North, Collins Amankwah.
Speaking to Pulse Ghana, NDC General Secretary Asiedu Nketia said there was "absolutely" no relation between the arrest and NDC.
"It is nothing to do with us," he said.
He said people should ignore the NPP's claims and that every "reasonable person" would see there is no basis for the claims.
The police were doing their job as mandated under the constitution in arresting Boasiako for alleged assault, he added.
"You can not beat people in your own party," Nketia said.
He said the matter was between the NPP and the police.
"If they [NPP] have decided they have to have violence in their party they should leave us out of these things."
