Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi has been granted bail.

The Asokwa District Magistrate court presided over Judge Owusu Korkor granted Wontumi bail in the sum of 20,000cedis with two sureties. One of the sureties should have a landed property or deposit an amount of 10,000cedis.

HelloFM's Senior Reporter, Samson K. Nyamekye, who was watch proceedings in court, reports that the judge also adjourned proceedings to June 1, 2016, after Egbert Faibille Jnr, lead counsel for the beleaguered NPP stalwart, pleaded with the court for a two-week period to settle what he described as a "family matter" - a case of assault against his client - out of court.

Chairman Wontumi was detained overnight by the Ashanti Regional Police Command for allegedly assaulting the Member of Parliament for Manhyia North, Collins Amankwah and the Constituency Secretary, Collins Owusu.

He was locked up in police custody on Tuesday after he turned himself in to the men and women in black after being declared wanted.

Scores of party activists then swarmed the Central Police Station to protest his detention since they felt the issue was just a simple assault, which should be handled by party executives; but the police called the bluff of the supporters and declined to give Wontumi bail.

Meanwhile, the MP for Manhyia North, Collins Amankwah has withdrawn the case against Chairman Wontumi.

In a letter written by counsel for the Manhyia North MP and their other client in the case, Felix Ibrahim, they indicated that their clients now intend to pursue an out of court settlement.
