A group, known as the Concerned Youth of Agona Swedru (CoYAS), last Wednesday staged a peaceful demonstration to register their displeasure over the poor state of roads in the town.

The protest was also to express their frustrations regarding the slow pace of work on the Akora drainage project being undertaken by Las Adventures Limited.

When work is complete on the project, it is expected that flooding in certain parts of the town would be curtailed.

The demonstration, dubbed, ‘Wukuda Tuntum’ which literally means Black Wednesday, saw the protesters, adorned in red and black attires, march through the principal streets of the town accompanied by brass band music.

Placards

They displayed placards some of which read, ‘Swedru deserves better,’ ‘Give us what we deserve’ and ’the lies must stop’.

They later presented a three page petition to the Chief of Agona Swedru, Ogidigram Okrupi Nana Kobina Asiedu Botwe II and the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Agona West, Mr Samuel Oppong.

An attempt to present a copy of the petition, which was signed by the convenors of the protest march, Nana Kwetu and Mr Samuel Okyere to the Member of Parliament (MP) for Agona West, Lawyer Charles Obeng-Inkoom, was, however, not successful as his office was locked.

Roads

Nana Kwetu said almost all roads in the town were inaccessible because huge potholes had developed on them.

According to him, the situation had caused distress to drivers and commuters, thus making life unbearable for the people.

He further alleged that several promises by the President, the assembly and the MP to fix the road had not materialised.

‘’We don’t want to say that the President and his people have deceived the good people of Agona Swedru,’’ the spokesperson intimated.

Akora project

Nana Kwetu further stated that the government had also failed to get the contractor dredging the Akora River to complete work.

According to him, the river had been channelled into a gutter with weak edges which he said posed danger to the people in an event of floods.

He, therefore, called for resumption of work on the project to help protect life and property.

Assurance

The MCE commended the demonstrators for the peaceful protest and assured them that their concerns would be presented to the appropriate quarters for the needed attention.
