Barcelona sold Johan Neeskens in 1979 because the star midfielder refused to pass toilet paper to then club president Jose Luis Nunes when in dire need, a new book claims.

Barca Inedit, from historian Manuel Thomas and journalist Frederic Porta, recalls when Neeksens was a star turn for Barca and Netherlands, having been named La Liga's Foreign Player of the Year three years previously.

Unfortunately, one decision ended his Spanish dream when Nunes reportedly found himself in a bit of a bind at Estadio Jose Rico Perez in Alicante.

With an upset stomach confining Nunes to a toilet stall and no toilet paper to be found, Neeksens is said to have ignored the cries for help and soon found himself shipped off to New York Cosmos.

The book details that fans were not best pleased at the surprise transfer, with Allan Simonsen signed as his replacement.

Neeskens returned to Barcelona as a coach in 2006 to work under Frank Rijkaard but was sacked, along with the manager, after failing to impress yet another president, this time Joan Laporta.

So, let that be a lesson to the likes of Neymar and Luis Suarez. Extra Time assumes Lionel Messi could get away with not being on toilet paper duty.
