Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump and Democratic rival Hillary Clinton, facing off in the highly anticipated first of three presidential debates at Hofstra University in New York on Monday evening, were like prize fighters, mocking each other, trading jabs and body blows, and after leaving the ring, each claiming to have landed serious punches.
The blockbuster debate was expected to draw a record-setting viewership, which some projected to be as many as100 million across television and live streaming on websites and social media platforms.

At the outset, Trump and Clinton were civil and calm, staking out their key positions. About 15 minutes in, they were talking over each other and aiming delightful barbs at each other, too. An hour in, the gloves came off, and the candidates were landing jabs and hurling zingers at each other.
Trump suggested America has become a third-world country.
“Maybe that’s because you don’t pay any federal income tax,” Clinton said.
“And it would be squandered too,” Trump replied.
Trump suggested Clinton has done nothing to help people in her time in public service.
“Donald, I know you live in your own reality," Clinton replied.
Trump, who boasted earlier that he didn't spend much time prepping for this debate, criticized Clinton for the time she spent preparing.
"You know what else I prepared for? I prepared to be president, and I think that's a good thing."
