The Zongo Chief of Old Tafo, a suburb of Kumasi in the Ashanti is backing the police to arrest and prosecute some Zongo youth who allegedly assaulted a resident last Sunday.

Alhaji Yussif Chibsah says if a deliberate decision is not taken to punish the perpetrators of the act; others would be encouraged to visit mayhem on residents knowing they will not be punished.

“If it has happened and nobody is taking action then it will encourage others and if action is taken it will deter others. Give some satisfaction to the man who was injured,” he told Joy News’ Mahmud Mohammed-Nurudeen.

A resident of Asante Line in Old Tafo was allegedly attacked by some Zongo youth Sunday, July 31.

Calls for reprisal on the Zongo youth was meted with the plea by Chiefs of Old Tafo for calm to be restored as the police investigate happenings.
The police on Wednesday met with Chiefs in Old Tafo to deliberate over the matter and to disclose to them plans to crack the whip on culprits.

Alhaji Chibsah believes there is the urgent need to restore peace and calm in the area, hence is supporting the police to duly punish the Zongo youth who did that.

He, however, said that “What we are looking for is not imprisonment per say, but how to bring the two warring faction together so that there is no winner and vanquish but everybody is at peace.” “So the police will know what to do.”

Even though prosecution is one such alternative to bringing about justice, Alhaji Chibsah said what matters is that at the end the clarion should be sounded that anyone who misbehaves, will not be left off the hook.

He appealed to the youth in Old Tafo to exercise restraint even as the police is working to bring justice. “We are trying to achieve social cohesion, peace among members of the community.”
