The controversial Assin Central Member of Parliament, Mr Kennedy Agyapong has endorsed the alleged assault of the Member of Parliament for Manhyia North in Kumasi, Mr Collins Owusu Amankwah by the Regional Chairman of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).

According to him, Chairman Wontumi did well by assaulting the MP and insisted he deserved more beatings.

“W’abo no a, w’abo no,” Mr Agyapong said in twi during a radio discussion programme on Asempa FM on Tuesday afternoon.

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP, Mr Bernard Antwi Boasiako (Chairman Wontumi) is said to have physically assaulted the MP and his constituency secretary, Ibrahim in Kumasi on Sunday whilst monitoring the ongoing limited voter registration exercise.

The two reported the matter to the police at Tafo Pankrono.

Subsequently, the regional police command issued a warrant for his arrest to assist in investigation. Chairman Wontumi and the two, have been engaged in a shadow boxing over disputed constituency album which is to be used to elect an MP for the area.

The MP, who is one of the contestants and Mr Ibrahim are contesting a move by Chairman Wontumi and the National Executive Committee (NEC) to have a re-run of all constituency executives who would form the Electoral College to elect an MP for the constituency.

Chairman Wontumi turned himself in to the police on Tuesday.

During the radio discussion on Asempa FM - Ekosii Sen hosted by Kwadwo Asare Baffour Acheampong (KABA) -, Mr Agyapong said Chairman Wontumi had every justification in launching the physical attack on the Member of Parliament.

He said Mr Owusu Amankwah deserved to be assaulted in that manner and that Chairman Wontumi was “fantastic” in initiating that move.

“He has done very well. I don’t know what happened and they said he has assaulted the MP. That is the kind of chairman we need,” he said.

Mr Agyapong accused Owusu Amankwah of clandestinely working against Nana Akufo-Addo, refusing to contribute financially to the course of the NPP and therefore deserves more beatings.
