The Electoral Commission (EC) says that it is mandated by law to only use the exhibition method in cleaning up the voters’ register ahead of the November 7 polls.
This follows calls by some opposition political parties and civil society groups for the validation of the current register, after their demands for a new voters’ register were rejected by the Commission.
According to Samuel Boadu, the Acting Director of Human Resources at the commission, they are mandated by law to exhibit the register as part of the process to clean it up.
“As enshrined in the CI 91 that we use, we can’t get a new register. We use exihibition to clean up the register in Ghana, let us all get on board to clean the register so that we can get a credible register this year,” he said.

Mr. Boadu added that the Commission will send the registers to their respective polling stations so that all corrections that need to be done would be done.
“In Ghana, we have adopted the exhibition process to clean the register. We will register people who are eighteen years and above and other legible Ghanaians who qualify. When we finish with that, then we will send the provisional register to all polling stations in the country, then with a date that is gazetted, Ghanaians will be called upon to come and check their voter information, as it appeared on their voter ID card.”
He therefore admonished Ghanaians to participate in the process in order for the register to be cleaned ahead of the polls in November
“When we do exhibitions, people do not turn up; but we want to admonish Ghanaians that this time round, the exhibition is a very important one so they should turn up, participate and help clean the register.”
There is mounting pressure, particularly from the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) and some pressure groups like the Let My Vote Count Alliance (LMVCA) for the EC to use validation as a way of cleaning up Ghana’s ‘bloated’ voters’ register.
Several protests have been staged against the EC’s decision not to compile a new register, with the groups arguing that the exhibition of the register would not help create a more credible voter’s list.
