DURBAN - A KwaZulu-Natal hospital was shut down temporarily on Wednesday after gunmen stormed in to finish off a taxi boss they had wounded earlier
.
The victim and his security guards had been attacked by the gunmen armed with AK-47 assault rifles.
More than 130 shots were fired during the ambush.
One of the attackers was shot dead at the scene and the taxi boss died of his wounds in the hospital.
Security guard Petros Mkhize said he only realised he was hit after he got out of the car.
"I protected my upper body and I just felt my leg become hot. That’s when I saw I'm hurt," said Mkhize.
The taxi boss was rushed to hospital, but could not be saved.
A spokesman for the health department said he was followed by some of the gunmen who tried unsuccessfully to find him.
Security company Blackwatch – which protects the KwaMaphumulo Taxi Association – said this is the eighth gunfight in ten months.
The violence is thought to be related to ongoing tensions between two taxi associations in the area.
Police spokesman Jay Naicker said police reinforcements were brought in to to area.
"They will be patrolling the taxi ranks and the taxis routes in the area just to ensure that's there's stability in the area," he said,
The Hawks have taken over the investigation and are hoping to make arrests soon.
