JOHANNESBURG - The ruling party is facing growing criticism over President Jacob Zuma's leadership.
Many believe Zuma's actions will cost the party come the local government elections.
A weekend newspaper report quoting former deputy president Kgalema Motlanthe has made waves.
Motlanthe reportedly said leaders with a conscience must step down to protect the party's image.
However, he doesn't mention President Jacob Zuma by name.
The ANC has refused to comment.
Last week, senior ANC leader Enoch Godongwana reportedly said that a state free from corporate capture is needed if economic transformation is to succeed in South Africa.
These comments come in the middle of a raging debate within the ANC-led alliance about the influence of the controversial Gupta family on President Zuma’s administration.
Meanwhile, the ANC says it will lodge a complaint with the Press Ombudsman against the Sunday Times over what it calls poor journalism.
The newspaper has published an article detailing the alleged events leading to former finance minister Nhlanhla Nene’s axing.
The article claims the controversial Gupta family offered Nene's job to deputy finance minister Mcebisi Jonas, last November.
Jonas is said to have turned down the offer.
After Nene was fired, Jonas was allegedly contacted once again with an offer to take the job -- this time by ANC Deputy Secretary General Jessie Duarte.
The party has dismissed the claims, saying the article contains no credible sources.
