President John Dramani Mahama has said that the aviation industry has the potential to contribute significantly to Ghana’s economic growth through job and wealth creation.

According to him, Ghana was adequately positioning itself to benefit from this potential economic boom.

President Mahama was speaking at the joint sod cutting ceremony for the construction of an air terminal at the Kotoka International Airport with the visiting Turkish Recep Tayyib Erdogan.

He said “as per the focus of the international air transport association (IATA), there will be over 6.5 billion air passengers by 2032 and this will generate about 103 million jobs and 5.8 trillion in economic activity. There is no doubt that the strong aviation sector will boost Ghana’s economic potential and will make it more productive, effective and efficient as a result of global competition.”

“The ultra-modern terminal three facility to be constructed will consist of five level facilities expanding up to 45,000 square metres of space and a capacity to process 1,250 passengers per hour. It will have its boarding bridges, it will have a large retail and commercial area, it will have three business lounges and the terminal will be capable of handling 5 million air passengers a year. This landmark project is to be completed by the end of July 2017,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Turkish President has since left the country following his two day visit to Ghana.
