Ghana’s Black Princesses suffered a painful defeat against New Zealand in their opening game at the ongoing FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup.
The Princesses dominated the first half, coming close in the 37th minute, when Jane Ayieyam was put through by Ernestina Abambila, but she blazed her shot over the bar from point blank range.
Ayieyam came close again on the stroke of half time, when her left footed shot was saved by New Zealand stopper, Nadia Olla.
The second half was a more balanced affair, with both teams going close on several occasions, but Wasila Diwura-Soale had arguably the chance of the game in the 72nd minute, when she maneuvered her way through the New Zealand defense, but had her shot saved by Nadia Olla.
It was heartbreak for the Princesses in the 89th minute, when a seemingly harmless through ball found its way onto the feet on Tayla Christensen, who dribbled past the helpless Maidens keeper, Victoria Antwi to calmly slot home the winner.
Ghana now faces a difficult challenge of overcoming powerhouses USA and France to have a chance of qualifying for the quarterfinals.
