A picture of the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, sipping a local fruit juice, Kalyppo, during one of his campaign tours, has set social media ablaze, especially Facebook, with many people posting pictures of themselves sipping the same product.
The picture was first posted on various social media by fanatics of the National Democratic Congress with the intention of mocking Nana Akufo-Addo, by showing that he was sipping an inexpensive fruit juice predominantly enjoyed by school pupils.
But it has turned out to be a huge publicity for the producers of the product, while also showing the massive endorsement the NPP presidential candidate enjoys among the electorate.
Alhassan Sayibu Suhuyini, the NDC parliamentary candidate for Tamale North, in an attempt to rubbish the Kalyppo obsession posted on his Facebook wall, “At my age I am reducing the intake of artificial stuff. No sugar, no preservatives, no additives. I choose natural, it is real. Beware of offers preserved by Additives and artificial stuff. I choose natural, It is healthy I choose JM.”
But in what appears to be a counter response from ace hiplife musician, A Plus, who recently endorsed the candidature of Nana Akufo-Addo with his song “Aben be bom,” he wrote on his wall, “People with kidney diseases, diabetes and cancer do not take carbonated drinks. Pray to God that at 72 years you'll be alive, strong and healthy enough to sip on some Kalypo!!! God has blessed this man.”
Some supporters of the NPP have chastised the NDC supporters over what they describe as “irrelevant propaganda”, arguing that Nana Akufo-Addo’s act was not out of place and that it demonstrated his commitment to the use of Made-in-Ghana products to promote the local economy.
Dubbed “Kalyfie”, from the words “Kalyppo and “Selfie”, the trend has seen big shots of the NPP, including the acting Chairman and acting General Secretary, Freddie Blay and John Boadu respectively, and other party giants, posting pictures of themselves with the fruit juice on their Facebook walls.
Meanwhile, Mustapha Hamid, spokesperson to the NPP Presidential candidate, has said the mad rush for the product, leading to its shortage in the various markets and shops, shows the extent of endorsement Nana Akufo-Addo has from the electorate.
“This Kalypo you are talking about, there is shortage of the drink in the markets and shops in Accra due to the mad rush by people. When this happens, public relations expert would explain that the person behind the shortage of the drink, who has the country at heart, yearning to change the fortunes of Ghana, is hugely accepted by Ghanaians.
“People have come to the realization that Nana Addo who has the blessings of God is the chosen one. We are taught in our Muslims, Christians, Buddists, Hindus and the various religious bodies circles that leaders are role models, so a role model can be a good or a bad role model depending on the character traits of the person, is much followed by people, Ghanaians are yearning for change,” he said in a radio interview.
He added: “Nana Addo proposed Northern Development Authority in 2008 and the NDC kicked against it but when they assumed office, they copied the policy idea and changed the name to SADA, the same with free Senior High School (SHS), cancelled nurses and teachers training allowances, now he has swallowed his own words, promising to pay the allowances, President Mahama is ruling the nation based on Nana Addo’s wisdom.”
