The All People’s Congress (APC) has accused the Mahama-led administration of stealing their policy which will see more psychiatric hospitals being built in the country.
General Secretary of the APC, Razak Opoku, in an interview said their party was the first to promise a psychiatric hospital in all ten regions of the country and wondered why the President highlighted that particular policy in NDC’s 2016 Manifesto highlight.
President John Mahama, giving a highlight of the 2016 Manifesto of the ruling National Democratic Congress, Tuesday, said the NDC will add two more Psychiatric Hospitals to the existing ones in Ghana if it wins the December 7 polls.
He revealed the hospitals will be built in the Ashanti and Northern regions in his second term of office.
“We will develop the Pantang Mental Hospital to a first class mental health facility” while plans are advanced to relocate that of Accra," he added.
He noted priority will be given to mental healthcare to make it more attractive.
The APC has also promised to establish a psychiatric hospital in all ten regions of the country as it outdoors what it describes as its “feasible and doable social intervention policies”.
The party believes mental health in the country has been “badly neglected with only three major health facilities” and deserves attention.
However, Razak Opoku said though the NDC has stolen their policy, the APC would implement its policies better than the parties stealing them given the opportunity.
For him, psychiatric units can be established at the various Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compounds in the interim as the party builds more facilities, especially psychiatric teaching hospitals, dedicated to mental conditions.
