Goalkeeper Eric Ofori Antwi saved two spot-kicks as Asante Kotoko labored to eliminated AK Shion 4-1 on penalties in the MTN FA Cup round of 64 tie on Sunday.
Last year's losing finalists were held 1-1 in regulation at the Sunyani Coronation Park.
AK Shion played the greater part of the second stanza with ten men after Daniel Oppong Romeo got sent off.
Winger Frank Sarfo Gyamfi gave the Porcupine Warriors a 1-0 lead in the first half but Francis Osei Asibey leveled on 80 minutes.
Five minutes before the equalizer, Kotoko captain Amos Frimpong was sent off for a second yellow card offence.
Kotoko have now advanced to the round of 32 stage.
